Oil on wood panel, 12” x 12”, unframed stained sides

Always baffled by the brightness and richness of color in the sunrises and sunsets, I have long searched for a way to paint them that will present them as I feel when I see them. This is the closest yet, but more experiments are needed. Included here are a few shots which show the beginning of my painting process. A slow build-up of thin glazes of oil color is necessary to achieve the brilliant colors. They are all built upon a monochromatic blue underpainting. I probably did 15 to 20 more layers of glazes before the final painting was achieved.
